The Williams County State's Attorney's Office is primarily a prosecuting agency representing the citizens of Williams County. Our office handles felony, misdemeanor, infraction and traffic cases as well as juvenile court matters, child support enforcement, and mental health hearings. The State's Attorney is the legal advisor for all county officials and chief prosecuting officer of the county.
If you feel that you are the victim of a crime, you should report it to law enforcement for investigation. The State's Attorney's Office does not conduct criminal investigations. If the crime occurred in the Williston city limits, it should be reported to the Williston Police Department at (701) 577-1212. If the crime occurred in the county, it should be reported to the Williams County Sheriff's Office at (701) 577-7700. After the investigation is completed by the appropriate agency, one of the state's attorneys in the State's Attorney's Office will review the matter and make a determination whether criminal charges will be filed and what the charges will be.
STATE LAW PROHIBITS THE STATE'S ATTORNEY FROM ADVISING PERSONS ON PRIVATE MATTERS. CIVIL MATTERS SHOULD BE HANDLED BY A PRIVATE ATTORNEY.
